John, Jesus and History volume 2

John, Jesus and History volume 2 November 11, 2009

My copy of John, Jesus, and History, Volume 2: Aspects of Historicity in the Fourth Gospel just arrived in the mail today. I contributed a chapter on the temple saying/incident. I’m looking forward to reading the other contributions, which include some by really big names in New Testament studies.

This volume, like the first, is the fruit of the John, Jesus and History Group at the Society of Biblical Literature annual meeting, gathering papers presented in that context. That project is still ongoing. I’m particulatly interested in the session planned for the 2010 SBL Annual Meeting in Atlanta which will focus on the words of Jesus. It is the words placed on the lips Jesus in John’s Gospel that it is the most problematic to treat as historically authentic, and it is this factor that often leads to various other potentially useful kinds of material in the Gospel being ignored.
