The Connection Between Hurricane Irene and Gay Marriage

There isn’t one. But before someone predictably either blames Hurricane Irene’s impact on New York on gay marriage, or fails to treat a last minute swerve of the hurricane away from the path of New York as indication of divine approval of gay marriage, I thought I would share this snarky poster, which says everything that needs to be said about the sort of image of God you end up with if you attribute forces of nature to a personal deity.

James, do you think elites in the 18th century were as dismissive of the idea weather is God’s moral action in the world? Why has this concept remained popular with the ignorant masses?

On a personal note James, If God (or the force that determines possible actions in the cosmos) does not send the weather in response to the demands of justice, is existence really good? If an atheist could acknowledge that an imperfect universe could be good wouldn’t they also have to acknowledge that God would be under no obligation to make existence better than it is now because we can say that it is good even as it is now.

“If God (or the force that determines possible actions in the cosmos) does not send the weather in response to the demands of justice, is existence really good?” yes? Is this a real question?
“If an atheist could acknowledge that an imperfect universe could be good wouldn’t they also have to acknowledge that God would be under no obligation to make existence better than it is now because we can say that it is good even as it is now.” no? If I see a person who is relatively happy but I have the power to make that person even more happy (say a starving person in africa who found a days worth of food, and I have the power to give them a years worth of food) I would say I am obliged to make their life better.

Abstract thnking as to “universals” or “ultimate concern” concerning practical needs always looks “good on paper”, but how is that going to be worked out pragmatically, unless you choose to make yourself available to the person in Africa, at the costs of other needs? And such a “universal” can’t be made to be everyone’s universal, otherwise, other needs in society suffer. Therefore, the impracticality of ‘the universal’….AND the determinaton of another’s life, which limits liberty of choice as to life’s purposes! (Equality is a philosophical dilemma to liberty…. Liberty and justice is defined within context of our nation state, which also limits “the universal”)

    Dr James, good sir,
I have written an objective queer analysis of N.T. Wright’s translation of the N.T. which I think you will enjoy reading. It carefully and critically exposes Wright’s “bending” of the text to reveal an anti-homosexual agenda!

many people in New York are mosty gay. They broke a world recored by more tan 8,000 people got married (gay). The Lord does not like that and New York might be distroyed if it keeps on happining. Those of you who dont belive in God or The
End of the World you should. It’s true. If you had read the Bible all of the phrofices in Revolution its al of of the hings that are happining right know. WE ARE LIVING IN NOAH’S TIME. All of the people in noah’s time were all sining in the eyes of the Lord- just like us. the Lord was not pleased with it and he disided to that only people who trusted in him would persue life and Noah would be the Father of many nations. we are living in these times and we need too repent. If we would fold knees and pray we would enter Heaven.

i think God is gonna distroy new york because of the gay people so it will have to go

  • Angievandemerwe

Mysteryboy, i am not being negative, but realistic. Practical realities trump ideals any day, as these are what drive real choices. And real choice is about liberty under law. No one else should prescribe my life, define my liberty or prioritze what the pursuit of my happiness should be….

Too bad the vatican isn’t in a hurricane prone area. That would be fun. And regarding their sex scandals, it confirms even more so that there is no link between hurricanes and men having sex with boys or other adult consenting males…
