Day of the Doctor Decision

Academics in the field of religion who are also fans of Doctor Who are finding themselves torn. The major conferences in our fields, the annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion coincide with the broadcast on television – and showing in theaters in 3D – of “The Day of the Doctor,” the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who.

I have a ticket to see it at the theater nearest Baltimore that I could find. But it is turning out that to get there will involve choosing to miss at least part of sessions and papers that I am interested in (ironically including one about Doctor Who!) as well as a reception that is typically the best at the conference, hosted by the publisher of the book I edited, Religion and Science Fiction. And so I have made up my mind not to go after all. :-(

I can’t seem to find information online at this point about whether the episode will be shown in theaters again after November 25th. If anyone has such information, please share it with me! Otherwise, if I do not see it then, they are bound to release a 3D DVD at some point, right?

I’m sure that I will manage to see it somehow. I’m just wondering whether there isn’t some chance that there will be a repeat showing in a movie theater so that I can see it there in 3D. In the meantime, here is the brief synopsis of the episode that the BBC has released.

In related news, there is apparently a minisode (perhaps a prequel?) in the works called “The Last Day” which is of obvious interest to those fascinated by Doctor Who’s religious themes. And this great image about waiting for an older Doctor comes to us courtesy of Brian of Morbius:

Here is the trailer for “The Day of the Doctor” in case you haven’t seen it:

I’m having the same quandary! I’m directing a play at Baylor University and the first rehearsal is scheduled for November 25!

Surely with all showings selling out on the 25th, they are bound to repeat it on the 26th, right? (He says hopefully…)

      • Steven Pounders

        Surely!

(Heck, I’d go to a midnight showing on the 25th!)

A colleague, who shall remain nameless to protect her awesomeness, just learned that she has funding to go to SBL, and is seriously torn whether to take it or keep her ticket to Doctor Who.

On the other hand, I’m pretty sure Goodacre said there were Monday showings. Check Fandango.

I have a ticket to the Monday showing as close to Baltimore as there is available. But I’d need to miss out on conference presentations and other such things in order to go. And so that’s the issue.

Are you interested in a ticket? :-)

Sadly, I do not have funding for SBL this year. But my colleague might be interested.

“they are bound to release a 3D DVD at some point, right?”
If they can make money on it, im sure it will be on DVD. Just might take a while. I dont buy any DVD movies anymore, unless they are 3D. I am impressed with the technology, and better at home than in a theater. Waiting for Gravity to come out. Suppose to be comparable to Kubric’s 2001.

The 3d blu ray is scheduled to come out December 10. Most theaters are showing it on Nov 23 while it is on television along with the Nov 25 showing. Also, the theater that I’m seeing it at on the 25th has two showings that day, one at 10:30pm. Maybe check if the Baltimore theater has a late showing of it that will allow you to do SBL/AAR and Doctor Who! Otherwise, the 3D showing will be at my house in Ft Worth on December 10 as I have already preordered the 3d Bluray and have a 55 inch 3d tv!

Thanks so much for pointing this out! While the theater that I had looked at did not have a later showing, there is one that does in the Baltimore area. I’m going to look into it!

  • Robert Puckett

As the Director of Meetings for the AAR, I sincerely apologize for this conflict. :-)

Seriously, I’d love to sneak away on Saturday afternoon and watch it myself. My wife may be going to the Baltimore Science Fiction Society to watch it with them.

There’s a showing on the Monday of AAR at 10pm that I’m looking into, which interferes far less with sessions and other conference-related meetings and events. Perhaps a bunch of us should organize to go together!

It will be on BBC America on Nov 23. In fact, there will be a three day event on BBC America. Find someone with Dish Network and you’ll be able to have them record it for you.
