Stereotyping

Stereotyping September 16, 2015

I saw the news about Ahmed Mohamed being handcuffed at his Texas school for bringing to school a clock that he made himself.

I lamented the unfair stereotyping of individuals based on their name, their religion, their background.

And then I realized that all that transpired in fact confirmed stereotypes that some of us have…of Texans.

Perhaps I should also hope that president Obama’s response – inviting Ahmed to the White House – will confirm stereotypes that people have of our president, and of liberal and progressive Christians, of whom the president is one.

But clearly if your stereotype of Muslims – and of people with names like Ahmed and Mohamed – is that they build bombs, then this story should serve to challenge your stereotypes.

How many Muslims have to build clocks and not kill anyone before Americans start to take this issue seriously?
