Education and Evolution

Education and Evolution October 26, 2009

I may when I have more time say more about Russ Pulliam’s second piece on evolution and faith. The main thing that disturbs me is that he envisages a hypothetical scenario in which one chooses institutions of higher education based on the grade you’ll get for already thinking as you do. If I didn’t think the point of institutions such as the university where I teach was to educate, so that people know more and reason better when they leave than when they got here, then I hope I’d go look for some other line of work that actually had a point to it.

At any rate, two other bloggers have interacted with Pulliam: The Clever Badger and Rev. Ouabache. Both posts are worth a look.

For a nice illustration of how education can change one’s mind about evolution, check out today’s guest post over at An Evangelical Dialogue On Evolution.

One last post I wish to share isn’t on this topic, but it does relate to another topic we’ve been discussing here recently. What Did I Just Step In? has a post about C. S. Lewis’ “most embarassing verse in the Bible”, and the verse in question turns out to be the prediction in Mark 13 that the generation that heard Jesus would not pass away until the end came.
