Hypnotic Yet Appalling

It’s not quite a Beautiful Machine, but it is arresting, isn’t it? It’s hard to look away while the fruit*-like clots are extruded into the pastry*-like sleeves to make a food-like product: in this case, a tasty Hostess Fruit Pie. More evidence that our machines have a kind of awful poetry to them.

    Hey, now. I’d never choose a Hostess Fruit Pie over a real fruit or a real pie, but several years ago I made sure my children experienced one, as a right of passage more than anything else. I’m glad I did, because I hear the new Hostess fruit pies aren’t the same.
