Mrs Robin’s egg – uh oh, did we lose a baby?

Mrs Robin’s egg – uh oh, did we lose a baby? May 19, 2014

Last night, either Mr. or Mrs. Robin brought home a juicy worm for the babies.

Mrs. Robin snuck away this afternoon – to do a little worm hunting, I imagine – so I used that opportunity to sneak into the garage attic to check on the babies. As of yesterday, we had three babies and one unhatched egg.

Today, I see three scrawny but growing nestlings … but no egg.

I see three babies … and no egg? What happened to baby #4?

It’s possible that the egg is underneath one of the baby birds. There’s also the very real possibility that another bird stole the egg. I didn’t see any shells in the yard but I’m actually kind of afraid to look.

And another surprise: I thought Mrs. Robin was on her own because I haven’t yet seen a Mr. Robin hanging around. But darling husband, who is just as invested in this little birdy family as I am (he is the one, remember, who gave Mrs. Robin a helping hand with her nest building), said yesterday he saw two robins alternating bringing worms and sitting on the nest. Mrs. Robin flew off the nest, Mr. Robin brought the worm, Mrs. Robin came back to feed the birds and sit on the nest. Not sure if they’re a couple or have just negotiated an amicable parenting arrangement. But I’m glad she’s not by herself either way.

I’m on baby robin watch and will keep you posted! And if you’ve missed any posts, you can follow along with Mrs. Robin and her eggs in these posts.
