Recently there was an attack in Barcelona, the heart of Spain. A man drove a van into pedestrians, injuring and killing many. ISIS has claimed responsibility for this attack.

It is unfortunate to hear that people were hurt and killed, but what is even more unfortunate is that this act was committed in the name of God. Not only do these perpetrators deserve to be brought to justice but the attack goes completely against the Islamic teachings taught by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, himself.

In the compilation of Hadith, Al-Nasai, it is said that the prophet counted the “killing of a soul” among the four “major sins.”

These actions perpetrated by these individuals doesn’t go just against the saying of the prophet, but the Holy Quran as well. The Quran states “Whosoever killed a person…It shall be as if he killed all mankind.” (5:33)

By committing this act they are going against the teaching of the Quran and therefore, are not a representation of the teachings of Islam.

If you would like to find a true representation of Islam look towards the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The community has been combating extremism and radicalization since our establishment in the USA for almost one hundred years.

The worldwide Khalifa of the community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, said in his sermon: “those who seek to justify their hateful acts in the name of Islam are serving only to defame it in the worst possible way.”

It is easy to point to the screen and proclaim these individuals represent the religion of Islam, and sadly that is the reality of the media. However, one needs to look at the teachings that the actions were based upon and truly decide which group practices true Islam.

You decide which truly practices Islam; a bunch of criminals and terrorists who use violence for their aims? Or a community that has been preaching peace worldwide since 1889 with the motto: Love For All, Hatred for None? Take your pick.
