Straightforward Answers about Indiana’s RFRA Law

Straightforward Answers about Indiana’s RFRA Law March 31, 2015

Last week, the Indiana legislature passed and Gov. Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, joining a long list of states that have passed a version of the federal RFRA law passed with near-unanimous support from Congress in 1993 and signed by President Clinton. The purpose of the law is straightforward: RFRA requires that laws that inhibit a citizen’s constitutional right to religious free exercise 1) further a compelling government interest; and 2) do so in the least-restrictive means possible.

Despite simply offering reasonable protections for a basic human right explictly guaranteed by the first-amendment, Pence and his state were immediately subjected to the full force of the activist LGBT movement, including misleading stories from media, threatens of boycotts from Fortune 100 companies, and lies from activists themselves.

It falls on Manhattan Declaration signers to ensure the truth is told, and to support courageous leaders when they do the right thing.

Last year, politicians in Arizona buckled under pressure and failed to pass a similiar law; another debate is currently raging in Georgia. Below are links to multiple articles explaining and defending RFRA laws in greater detail.
