13 Songs for Yule

The Winter Solstice is around the corner. Some of us have already celebrated Yule with our friends, family and faith community. This year we have a unique eclipse joining the Solstice to make for a magical night. For those of you celebrating alone you might consider watching the webcast of the solstice sunrise at Newgrange. Maybe you plan to watch Hogfather or Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People.

13. Santa Claus is Pagan Too By Emerald Rose

If you can listen to this without singing along you have more willpower than I!

12. The Christians and The Pagans by Dar Williams

This is a song about the evening I am about to have with an eclectic collection of family and friends.

11. Here Comes the Sun by George Harrison

It has been a long cold lonely winter but here comes the sun and I say “It’s all right!”

10. Bring Back the Light by Gypsy

This song never gets old. Ever.

9. Winter Solstice Song – Lisa Thiel

We do find the light deep within. It’s lovely.

8. Solstice Bells by Jethro Tull

Rocking full out on a flute takes a very confident and sexy man!

7. You Are My Sunshine by Johnny Cash

We love the sun so much we refer to those dear in our lives as our “sunshine”.

6. Deck the Halls by the Animals of Youtube

One of the few carols we can embrace without alteration, sung by adorable pets.

5. Snow by Loreena McKennitt

While I likely will not have snow for Solstice, many of you will and will enjoy it more than I.

4. Carol of the Bells

Axial tilt is the reason for the season.

3. I’ll Follow the Sun by The Beatles

Which we do. We follow the sun on it’s yearly course through the heavens.

2. The Sun Is Gonna Rise by Bill Miller

I love Bill Miller with all my heart and I adore this song.

1. To Try For The Sun by Donovan

Keep pure your highest ideal. Strive ever towards it. Let naught turn you aside.

May you and yours have a Blessed Solstice and a Fruitful New Year!

    Present Opening

    Going forward

    Lights and music

    Swirling holiday cinnamon and myrrh

    Taste of snowflakes

    Crisp, cold, lively

    Ballet nights, stories from afar

    Joy becomes a hallmark

    Friendly carolers decorate our doorways

    Signs say peace is nigh

    If we take the highroad,

    ride sublime refrains

    to the sky

Warm healing rays grow inside and out

Affirm this season of life is about finding that place

of release that allows us to fly

    Soaring forward

    Sparkling stars regale

    Earthly gaze

    Spin a spiral of joy

for the pleasure of all coming days

    Here’s my list
of traditional Yule Songs in English and it tells where you can find the music for them and, if possible a recording. It lists mainly Holly and Ivy Songs, Wassail Songs and the Boar’s Head Carol, as well as songs of conviviality–fun for everyone to sing. I hope you like it.
