Quote of the Day (Daniel Ruth)

By the twisted logic of Storms’ “Academic Freedom Act,” what is to prevent teachers from telling students – because they feel like it – the Holocaust never happened, or that the 1969 moon landing was nothing more than a Hollywood sound stage hoax, or that Barack Obama is a Muslim?

That’s not “Academic Freedom.” It’s sanctioning intellectually dishonest scholastic anarchy.

Great quote! I LOVE how “academic freedom”, is always in quotes when talking about these bills. But it does make for easy quote mining, as the DI has already done.So three states are now trying to pass a bill like this. I’m not well versed in the ways of Human World, so let me ask you: how bad do you think this is? Do you foresee this creationist strategy spreading like crazy and gaining widespread acceptance?

It is hard to say. I think the problem is less with academic freedom in actual academic institutions, and more the culture we live in, which has a media that presents well-established history (the Holocaust, for instance) and science (e.g. evolution) alongside its detractors in the interest of “fairness”, giving credence to poorly-supported fringe ideas, which a public that feels free to choose then opts for, never realizing that they are dealing with matters that ought to be settled on the basis of evidence, and the evidence overwhelmingly supports one side.

    That… is a beautiful quote.
