The Spy Who Loved Christmas: Merry Mischevious Musical Mashups

I have an appreciation for music of various sorts, and hate to do anything to spoil good music (I know someone who cannot enjoy several pieces of Rachmaninov because they were hijacked as pop songs). But I also enjoy musical satire (as my mentions of and links to Igudesman and Joo and Victor Borge indicate). And so I’ve left doing mischevious things to Christmas songs until the post-holiday season, when the versions I’ve tampered with won’t come to mind and make you giggle during solemn celebrations of the season.

Here are three for your enjoyment:

On Her Majesty’s Carol Service

Fantasia on Keith Emerson’s Fantasia on Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia On Greensleeves

O Come All Ye Firthful

The first is the more amusing of the three, I think, and thus seemed worth a retake, and I think it turned out better as a result. Let me know if my warped egghead sense of humor is funny to anyone else out there!

  • Yes, the first was jolly fun. It's a keeper.Couldn't make much out of the third one, too much the wrong genre for me, I guess.BTW, did you know of the alternate text for the Ode to Joy? (h/t to some boorish American critic in the 19th century) It goes,Yankee Doodle went to townA-riding on a po-ony.Stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaro-oni.The ambitious can, of course, perform the reciprocal cross, but that's just to painful for me.

  • I'm just glad someone took the time to listen and liked it – thanks!"Ode to Joy" to the tune of "Yankee Doodle"? Yikes! We're still planning on performing a version of "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "Peaceful Easy Feeling" by The Eagles in church sometime…
