Vasks Videos

I have long enjoyed the music of contemporary Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, and had the privilege of meeting him on a visit to Latvia. If you have never discovered his music, here are some samples I found on YouTube that will give you an introduction.

Great stuff. Reminds me a little of Arvo Pärt. Heard of him?

  • Oh yes indeed! Pärt is also from the Baltic – Estonia, the neighboring country to the north of Vasks' native Latvia. There are certainly some shared traditions in the Baltic which are noticeable. The first piece I ever heard by Vasks is "Musica Dolorosa" which I heard broadcast on Bartok Radio Budapest, my favorite station to listen to when I lived in Romania (close enough to the Hungarian border to get this Hungarian station).
