What Aliens are Currently Watching on Earth TV

HT Carmen Andres

It is interesting to think that, if we continue to move increasingly towards cable and then internet as a means of distributing content, eventually phasing out the antenna broadcasts that leak our shows into space, some show currently on, if it continues long enough, might be the last TV show aliens pick up.

Imagine if you are monitoring signals from a far-away planet. You see an episode of “Dancing With The Stars” (in its 32nd season) and then suddenly nothing. Would you be secretly relieved? Would you assume that the show led to the downfall of our civilization? Or would you send out a space mission to investigate (with the aim that they subscribe your planet to earth TV if humanity turns out to still be around)?

My co-worker had an observation: are these signals directional? Radio waves do not seem to penetrate the earth (I can only hear Chicago stations in Alabama late at night) so the rabbit-ears on Aldebaran Prime might pick shows that those that viewers on Antares 3 never see.

Well, the rotation of the earth might help somewhat, but you're right, another planet's perception might be skewed, or they might lose interest if their initial perception was shaped by getting overnight paid advertising broadcasts.

With the signals stopping, along with the television and radio evangelical programs, the aliens might turn into premillennial dispensationalists. I'd be most worried about the so called "Family Radio" network that broadcasts around the world (so the signals will be omni-directional). They predict the end of the world in May 2011. I worry about non-Christians in the underdeveloped countries of the world thinking Christianity is bogus when June 2011 rolls around. Now I have to worry about aliens either thinking humans are wacko, or aliens starting a new dispensationalist cult off world.

Interesting . . . they must be American aliens as they only watch American tv shows . . .

Except that none of those listed were broadcast with enough strength to leave our atmosphere, let alone our solar system. Funny though.

I don't know about that. Maybe. Maybe not. The SETI site has one rather large antenna gain, with multiple antennas ganged together. Maybe the aliens have one superb antenna themselves, and know where to point it. I would not have thought we could detect the background radiation from the big bang. Kind of irrelevant, unless someone comes knocking. I am not expecting anyone to come calling.

That was hilarious. Those signals are not weak. A ship sits on the other side of the moon gathers all our signals and rebroadcasts them. The ships captain is paid by professors in other systems doing research on alternative food sources. Which broadcast do you think will do us in.

They might decide, upon seeing our nuclear tests, and descriptions of the mass exterminaton Gulags, that we needed to be stopped while there was still time.

Fortunately, though, evening using Carl Sagan's extremely optimistic calculations about the possibilities of extraterrestial life…now known to be deeply flawed…the chances of there being an advanced civilization within less than 1000 light years of earth are close to zero.Which would mean the World War Two Stuff won't reach them until about 2940,We everyone who posts this stuff will be long forgotten.
