Miley Cyrus on Marriage Equality

I am impressed by Miley Cyrus’ grasp of that central Christian principle, the Golden Rule. Here’s an excerpt of something she wrote recently (defending a tattoo she got symbolizing that “all love is equal”):

Imagine finding someone you love more than anything in the world, who you would risk your life for but couldn’t marry. And you couldn’t have that special day the way your friends do—you know, wear the ring on your finger and have it mean the same thing as everybody else. Just put yourself in that person’s shoes. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

When I shared a picture of my tattoo on my Twitter page and said, “All LOVE is equal,” a lot of people mocked me—they said, “What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!” And I said, “Well, if you were a true Christian, you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love.” The debate resulted in a lot of threats and hate mail to people who agreed and disagreed with me. At one point I had to say, “Dude, everyone lay off.” Can’t people have friendly debates about sensitive topics without it turning into unnecessary threats?

I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?

This is from a piece in Glamour which was linked to by Slacktivist and Truth Wins Out.

This is a double hard sell to mainstream, because of “the Bible’s forbidding it”, the culture’s traditional understandings of family, and the quesiness over how the same sex couple might be imbibing on sex and what effects that might have on/to society….

Some people are going to not feel comfortable with homosexual marriage, but does that give them the right to undermine those who “differ” in allocating their civil liberties?

Those people and churches that do not feel comfortable with these civil liberties, can still define themselves apart from such as these, in thier own churches or church schools.

The conflict will come over public arenas, like public schools, and housing. Will there be ways to protect civil liberties, while at the same time allowing for both parties to have a particular bias about what is right? Liberty must be equal, which validates diversity, not confomity.

God created a man and a woman. And I don’t know where gay and lesbian came from. All I know marriage is only for man and a woman. Maybe in dating it can be.

Very strange that you claim to believe God is Creator and yet do not know where your fellow human beings came from. Is this a joke?

    • You are so very ignorant. If you believe in the bible, God created all men, all women, all are gods children. He made us all different, black, white, browm, women, men, all with different personalities, and feelings. Love shouldn’t be something we try to hinder, mock or discourage. EVER. Try to crawl into this centry if you can, your way of thinking is truly midevil…

God created a man and a woman but so what? We need men and women to carry on the human race, sure, but surely if you think that gays and lesbians should not exist because they don’t contribute to the reproduction of people, then by the same token, shouldn’t it be a law that any straight married couple should have children? Get with the times, there is no logical or practical reason nowadays for gay couples not to be allowed to marry. All it is is a few sad out-of-date people clinging to beliefs that were created centuries ago, when it truly was impractical for gay marriage to exist, and every married couple had as many children as was possible.
And people can’t control who they fall in love with. If some man fell in love with another man, would you honestly ask him to choose to be with a woman who he couldn’t love, and wasn’t physically attracted to at all, for the rest of his life? While feeling the whole while like he was cheating on the love of his life, who he had to watch go by every day and pretend not to pay any attention to? Imagine the anguish. You’d go crazy.
