Is Joel Osteen saying that following Christ doesn’t involve suffering?

Take a close and careful listen to this recent interview Wolf Blitzer of CNN had with Pastor Joel Osteen. While many will be shocked over his statements about Mormonism, to me the more astounding assertion he makes is related to the subject of Christianity and the theme of suffering. Listen to the interview, check your Bible and let me know your thoughts.

Sigh. I hear what Joel is saying regarding what Christian’s thought about humility when he was growing up. This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. True, it might be easier to be humble and follow Jesus if we’re poor. True, we live in a culture that elevates and worships power and material wealth over everything else. True, Jesus said that it is hard for a rich man to enter heaven.
But should we keep ourselves in a situation of poverty in order to honor God with humility? This is tricky. I am tempted to praise myself for not worshiping money, for shopping at Goodwill, for befriending the homeless, and for living in an 800 s/f condo. I am tempted to think of myself as better than the rich. Oh my, rich or poor, we’re all human. We all seek praise.
The truth is, Jesus modeled to us what it looks like to abandon our old lives, pick up the cross, and follow Him. He cared about God’s creation, He invested in people, prayer, and fasting. And He suffered greatly because of the fall of man. That is what we can expect if we are true followers.
And by the way, that comment above is most likely the nicest thing I’ve ever said about Joel Osteen. Ick.
