A year in review

A year in review January 2, 2012

What a year it has been!

I think I’ll recap some of the highlights:

I turned 21 and had my first alcoholic beverage (a Bud Light. Gross. Happy to say that Abe has taught me to appreciate good beer, and I will never again darken the doorways of my tongue with a Bud Light)

Celebrated with these cool folks

My boyfriend of three years broke up with me on facebook (which didn’t seem like a highlight at the time, but looking back, all I can think is Hallelujah, Chunky Peanut Butter!)

I discovered that I could, in fact, survive without him.

I sang my favorite symphony, Beethoven’s Ninth, with the BGSU University Chorus and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.

I “came out” as a feminist.

Some guy named Abraham asked to take me out to coffee, and I said yes, because, you can’t say no to a guy named Abraham when your name is Sarah, right?

Abe and I had our first date. We watched Shaun of the Dead.

I taught Abe how to kiss.

Abe taught me how to cook.

I visited fabulous friends at Grace College.

I chose to love someone.

I went to counseling.

I quit my job the way I’ve always dreamed of quitting it–by saying, “You can’t fire me! I quit!” and stomping out.

I road tripped to Nashville.

I got a tattoo

I started blogging on a regular basis.

I went to the midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2.

I met (and side-hugged) Jon Acuff

I went to Warped Tour (which I’ve wanted to go to since my angsty teen years), and I met (some of) Relient K…

…And the insanity that is Foxy Shazam.

I went crowd surfing (and was dropped in a mosh pit)

I went to Harry Potter World in Florida (and, yes, I tried Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean and Butter Beer)

I signed my first lease and paid my first electric bill and lived in a HOUSE!

I made my favorite blogger, Rachel Held Evan’s “Sunday Superlatives” list (three times!)

I joined BGSU’s campus feminist group

I saw Jonathan Coulton (of “that one song at the end of Portal” fame) in concert.

And, I saw one of my favorite bands of all time, They Might Be Giants, in concert.

My BEST FRIEND SINCE WE WERE BABIES got married, and I was the maid of honor!

For the first time, I submitted an article to a magazine and I submitted essays to books.

I made 32 cents off of something that I wrote!

I lost my faith.

I found it again.

I made my struggles with depression public.

And I went to a doctor with those struggles.

I started taking Zoloft, and discovered what it was like to be happy again!

I found a unicorn.

I sat in the “splatter zone” at Evil Dead: The Musical.

I hosted a Thanksgiving dinner (of turkey burgers)

I participated in a protest.

I participated in No-Shave November

I played the new Zelda game!

I changed my major to Women’s Studies

I asked an awesome man if he would marry me.

He said yes.

He asked me to marry him.

I said yes.

We started planning our Zelda-themed wedding that will take place at an as of yet unknown time in the future

We turned my bedroom into a blanket fort to celebrate

I was an extra in a Foxy Shazam music video.

I learned that two of my favorite dead bands, The Beach Boys (with Brian Wilson), and Five Iron Frenzy, are both getting back together to tour and record new music.

I learned to play the organ and the harpsichord.

I survived the hardest (but most wonderful) year of my life.

And (one of my favorites), I got to know some of you awesome folks! Thanks for making my first year in the “blogosphere” so pleasant, and thanks for being good friends! You’re always encouraging, inspiring, and challenging me! Y’all are the best.

What were some of the highlights of your year? What awesome shenanigans do you have planned for 2012?
