Partners Work Together to Clean up the Streets of East Hollywood

The California Crusader covers a neighborhood cleanup in East Hollywood, co-organized by Vons, the LAPD, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell’s office and the Way to Happiness Foundation chapter sponsored by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

Vons Grocery Store on Sunset and Virgil partnered up with the Los Angeles Police Department, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell’s District 13 and The Way to Happiness Los Angeles to clean up their neighborhood last Saturday.

Over eighty people arrived at Vons first thing in the morning and were greeted with coffee, bagels and donuts from the grocery store, donned new T-Shirts with the #ProjectCleanLA hashtag and the project’s motto “Help keep our neighborhood clean, safe and healthy!”  Then they grabbed trash bags, brooms, shovels and gloves, then divided up to cover several predetermined trash routes.

One team powerwashed some of the dirtiest areas of the city sidewalks I n the Los Angeles Unified School District, the majority of students — about 430,000 — are eligible for free and reduced-cost meals, aimed at assisting low-income families. But the food doesn’t stop with the school year.

On Monday, the district kicked off its summer food service program, giving free meals and snacks to children at about 300 schools and, through the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, about 100 city sites.The program, for children between 1 and 18 years old, is paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the California Department of Education. Most of the schools will serve the free summer meals until July 28, though some sites might extend that. Partners Work Together to Clean up the Streets of East Hollywood along Vermont Blvd and another team, led by Brenda Arces, the Manager of Vons grocery store, handled graffiti on local buildings. Additionally, there was a tree cleanup team (lopping off branches that are growing out of the roots) City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell from City District 13 provided all of the cleaning supplies and The Way to Happiness LA jumped on board with volunteers and hundreds of pounds of trash was removed from the neighborhood. Project Clean LA is looking for other neighborhoods that might want to get involved and organize a cleanup.
