Security Blanket

Security Blanket October 13, 2012

Spend 20 minutes contemplating your life.  What are the things in your life that help you feel secure?  Is it your job?  Insurance?  A growing retirement account?  A gun under the bed?

After contemplating your sources of security, replace each one in your mind with the often repeated phrase in the scriptures, “Do not fear for I am with you.”  The “I am,” of course, is God.

Consider getting rid of one of your security blankets, especially if you find it particularly hard to replace with God’s promise of security.  What if you reduced your insurance coverage and gave the difference to pay the medical bills of someone without?  What if you re-evaluated your retirement account and donated some of it to a struggling organization working to meet the needs of the poor?  Its actions like these that break us free from the illusory security of the “world” and brink us more deeply into the reality of God’s kingdom.
