Couric and Company – Reviewing the Blog

Hugh Hewitt looks at the new CBS Evening News blog - Couric and Company and pronounces it "perky" which makes one wince. He suggests that the blog editor, Greg Kandra, has a rather thankless job. (Well, Hugh actually calls it, "the most embarrassing gig in the entire blogosphere." I completely disagree, there. That job has been taken up by whoever it is who runs about DU and Koz deleting comments by dissenters in order to maintain blog-purity and conformity, but I digress). It may well be … [Read more...]

Sanity, insanity, distortions and questions

The problem with writing as much as I do is that I don't get to read as much as I'd like. Too often I fall behind in reading the folks in my blogroll - who are there because I think they're absolutely worth reading - and linking to them in "round ups," but it is the only way I can direct you to so much interesting stuff and still stay reasonably sane. I hope the folks I link to don't feel slighted that their good work is not much excerpted in round ups. My heart is in the right place! And … [Read more...]

First reviews of Couric

Howie Kurtz has the quickest review up, near as I can see, and he seemed to like Katie Couric just fine. The first block said it all. Couric led with a three-minute news feature by Lara Logan in Afghanistan, with striking footage of Taliban fighters with their weapons. It was not a hard-news "scoop," and therefore an unusual lead story, but an eye-opening look at America's other war. This was followed by the only this-happened-today story, a Jim Axelrod report on President Bush's latest speech … [Read more...]

Faith and Reason and Forced Conversions

"Was not Nagasaki the chosen victim, the lamb without blemish, slain as a whole burnt offering on an altar of sacrifice, atoning for the sins of all nations during World War II?" - Dr. Takashi Nagai 1908-1951, on Martyrdom, from All Saints by Robert EllsbergIt is the rarest of days when I disagree with my favorite blogfather Ed Morrissey, but after mulling over this post of his as well as others, and after thinking quite a lot about the forced conversion of Fox News' Steve Centanni and Olaf … [Read more...]

It is never easy to lose a parent

Josh Marshall is mourning the loss of his dad and writing about it movingly.I think we understood each other. I remember last year at my wedding, after I broke the glass and kissed my new wife, turning to him and hugging him, holding and being held by him. And I think it was complete. In all the years I knew my father I don’t think there was any time I knew him happier or more content than in the final years of his life. Two days after he died I wrote him a long letter that was with him when h … [Read more...]

What are you doing on 9/11/06?

We have seen their kind before. They’re the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history’s unmarked grave of discarded lies. Americans are asking, “How will we fight and win this war?”We will direct every resource at our command — every m … [Read more...]

The Launch of the CBS Couric

She has a very good writer - at the bloghelm, anyway - it seems. We’ll be swapping stories, sharing opinions, asking questions and generally just taking stock. In the little village that is CBS News, you might consider “Couric & Co” the coffee house on the corner, where something is always brewing. That's a great line. As I wrote a few weeks ago I am hopeful but not optimistic:What I am getting is that the CBS Evening News is going to commit to even more aggressively “instructing” us rat … [Read more...]

Tutto Mozart, Tutto Bryn!

Ah, after Labor Day it's never too soon to start thinking about Christmas, and Bryn Terfel's new album of Mozart arias and duets seems like just the ticket, to me! (To Fausta, too, I'm betting!)The album gets a five-star review here, and another terrific review hereBRYN TERFEL Tutto Mozart With Miah Persson (soprano), Christine Rice (mezzo), Scottish Chamber Orchestra, cond Charles Mackerras Since his forays into Wagner repertory, one might have expected the Welshman to have outgrown his … [Read more...]

Connectivity problems again

That and the whole throat/chest thing is also going on right now. But more the computuer problems. I'm doing this on a borrowed machine. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Thanks for bearing with me.Meanwhile, enjoy The US Naval Drill Team at the Maternal Optimist, (yes, those are bayonets at the tips of the rifles they're throwing around) and Rick Moran's take on the 9/11 tinfoil hat brigade. And note how history repeats itself. Even down to the sloganeering??? Ah, well...cute notion. … [Read more...]

Two smart additions to the blogroll

To be honest, I thought I already had the mighty Headmistress on the blogroll and was very surprised to see that I'd neglected her. I love the site - it's smart, varied, funny, thoughtful, and while the focus is on homeschooling and family, it's also about politics, faith, books and all sorts of common and uncommon issues. I never go there without taking something good away.Snarky Bastards I never saw before today, but I fell in love with this group-blog's vigor and their clear love of … [Read more...]

A Friday Night Roundup

Seems Clinton would be smarter to let this lie than invite more scrutiny: That would be the opinion of many, including Instapundit who reports that the Clintonistas are trying mightily to force a do-over on ABC's The Path to 9/11. This is an interesting problem. Supposedly the Clintons are concerned that they come off as a bit negligent in the 1990's (!)...if they can't get an edit to a more comfortable "truth" their only recourse will be do send the usual talking heads out to discredit the … [Read more...]

Real attempts on the president’s life – UPDATED

:::Scroll Down for Update:::Remember that bizarre incident in Chile where President Bush had to come to the aid of his own Secret Service guy?I remember it. I remember seeing video of it, and watching Bush push people away from his guard and haul him in, then flick his cuffs, take his wife's hand and greet a dignitary. Classy and cool. And you can watch the video, thanks to Marie. Thanks too, to RW and Dottie.DJ Drummond has a long must-read of a post over at Wizbang in which he … [Read more...]

All work and no play…

Makes me cranky. Since you last checked in here (probably) there are new posts here, here, here, here, here and here, here and I've updated The BookshelfI have worked very, very hard for the last few days, and I deserve a present. So, I'm going to indulge myself and look at Bryn for a little while, and listen to him and watch him sing the hell out of 'Miei rampolli femminini' from Rossini's La Cenerentola.Yes, I know I've linked to that piece before, but it's too much fun not to watch … [Read more...]
