Catholic Funeral Arrangements and Preparing for a Happy Death…

still not dead

... Hey, guess what. You're going to die. I'm going to die. Everybody dies. And yet so many of us go on about our lives acting as if death is something that happens to other people.Maybe that's why so many of us are unprepared for death when it inevitably comes. As Catholics, though, we should embrace death, prepare for it, and face it head on.With the passing of my Abuela a few things come to mind.Never assume your family is going to know or understand the sacraments and … [Read more...]

The New Ride…

... Meet Christine. The vehicle that changed my mind about driving.I always said that if I ever won the lottery the first thing I would do was hire a chauffeur and never drive again for the rest of my life. That was how much I hated driving. Turns out, it's not driving I really hate. I was just driving the wrong vehicle.Enter Christine, the TARDIS blue Jeep Patriot who replaced my crawling at death's door Honda last week. Christine, named after the Stephen King novel for the … [Read more...]

An Update, Responses, Clarifications, and Reactions to My “Denied Communion on the Tongue” Post…

... Let me take a moment to respond. My previous post about being refused reception of the Eucharist on the tongue during my grandmother's funeral has received quite a bit of attention and with over 570 comments and an inbox overflowing with emails I have found it impossible to respond to each one individually. For the sake of efficiency I decided to break down the responses by category and respond here. Before I do, this must be said.I received a very gracious response from the … [Read more...]

Denied Communion on the Tongue at My Grandmother’s Funeral…

***Please see update posted 3/13/15***... I just had the absolute worst experience ever during mass, at my Abuela's funeral no less. I wasn't going to post about here but I feel I have a duty to warn you all. If you ever happen to find yourself visiting the Tidewater area of Virginia and need to go to mass... just drive right by St. Therese in Chesapeake. Simply make the sign of the cross and keep on driving. Don't look back. Trust me.But of course, feel free to completely ignore my … [Read more...]

... Aw, shucks. You guys.I just wanted to give a big, fat "thank you" to everyone who donated and helped spread the word through your tweets, facebook shares, and blog posts.I wasn't expecting anywhere near this much support. The extra donations are really going to help since I found out last night my car has absolutely no trade-in value - it was in a previous accident and I hold a total loss title on it.I can use the extra for the taxes, title, and registration.I just wanted … [Read more...]

Inside the Silence at Belmont Abbey College…

I make this look good

... I got a special little place in my heart for Belmont Abbey.Reading this article reminded me I've been away too long. It's also nice to see they've lowered the tuition by 1/3. I've always thought how cruelly unfair it is that Catholic education is often too expensive for most Catholic families. But I digress. Our State Magazine has a very nice, reflective piece about the Abbey in this month's edition. Pop over there and check it out, and if you're every in the Charlotte area of North … [Read more...]
