Coming to Peace on the Path of the Dark Goddess

When Swami Vivekananda spoke at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893, he ignited the West's interest in Hinduism and created a heart-opening moment for the global north to move back into its connection to the world. Welcoming everyone with the words, "Sisters and Brothers of America," he invoked a sensibility of relationality and warmed the room. What most didn't know when he received a standing ovation was that his own personal heart had been consumed by the Dark Goddess, Kali. While he … [Read more...]

Women’s prayers from the Parliament

Women’s PrayersThe prayers of women were woven throughout this Parliament: spoken into themicrophone from the plenary stage, danced in flash mobs with spontaneousjoy, encoded in the footsteps of the silent river of women during theWomen’s Multi-Faith Peace Walk and offered with tobacco at sunrise aroundthe Sacred Fire.  I was blessed to offer these two prayers to open and closethe workshop Embodied Service: The Wholeness of Women’s SpiritualLeadership.Opening Prayer:Beloved One, Spirit … [Read more...]

I am stirred by these words in both an invigorating and a disheartening  way.  I am delighted that there will be a designated event in which women can be authentically themselves, feel supported in that expression and notice what arises individually and collectively from being in this fertile field. I am disheartened that this hasn't been the experience for women for a very long time, that we have had to either fight for what is our natural place of contribution in this world or withdraw in o … [Read more...]

On Feminine Ground: for our Work of Justice, Peace, and Sustainability

The words “On Feminine Ground” stir in me dreams of a transformed world. On Feminine Ground everyone has freedom to become all we are created to be in the divine image. On Feminine Ground all creation flourishes. For too long our world has been out of balance with the masculine dominating and the feminine subordinated or excluded. We have all suffered from this imbalance. On Feminine Ground there will be a healthy balance that encourages all of us to embrace our wholeness and to ex … [Read more...]

My feet are planted: finding my own feminine ground

The phrase “On Feminine Ground” stirs up thoughts from the very deep internal, personal to the big global picture. I have been attempting to find my own feminine ground for my whole life. It’s an ongoing practice in a world that seemingly does everything it can to take me up and away and knock me off center.  My values are often at odds with the dominant culture. After two millennia of denigration of the feminine, our task in this time is to elevate and honor the feminine and nurture and witness … [Read more...]

Shame and Voice: Truth shall grow from the ground

“Truth shall grow from the ground” Psalms 85:11It is deep within the ground that seeds decompose and produce new fruit. The cycle of creation involves necessary destruction. Things are always in flow, in flux. My body- and all that it holds- is my ground. In the creation story in Genesis we learn that the human was formed from earth and then given life and spirit through the breath of the divine. The human is a magnificent coming together of matter and spirit: “Truth shall grow from the groun … [Read more...]

Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity through the Divine Feminine

When I commune with nature in my backyard, a wild Everglade preservation, I come into a meditative state where heart and mind are one. I feel deep peace and reverence for all life, a sense of Oneness with Mother Earth and the cosmos. This state of bliss quiets my brain chatter and I become I am who I am, no better or lesser and in sync with creation. I would love to stay in this state while co-existing in the modern world, but self-doubts and self-consciousness interfere. It is in meditation, … [Read more...]

Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity in a Community of Women

The first time I heard the words ‘Reclaiming the Heart of our Humanity’, they took my breath away. Alison Fast, one of the young leaders in our Women of Spirit and Faith community, called to tell me she felt inspired to suggest these words as the theme of the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions. I gasped, that sharp intake of breath that occurs when my heart and my head simultaneously recognize I am in the presence of something powerful and transformative. I began immediately to carry the ph … [Read more...]
