Image by Skwishy via Flickr Inspiration can come from the strangest places. I’ve always wanted to live in a palace, since, naturally, I’ve always wanted to be a princess. Or a queen. I don’t tend to dream small. At least, I didn’t then… Obviously, joining a royal family wasn’t likely to happen. Then, when I was in fourth grade, my girlfriend Mary Dahm, brought her one inch to one foot scale dollhouse to school for show and tell, and I... Read more

At first, I thought it was a very large bee, quite close to my head! But when I looked up, there she was! A hovering hummingbird! I knew all those flowers would pay off! I’m a little sorry I haven’t put up a feeder, but I guess there’s still time. It was definitely a lady hummingbird, which only seems appropriate somehow. (Like Ladybugs, it’s hard to imagine a male!) I feel like I’ve really arrived, garden-wise. And, on a completely... Read more

I was hoping to get a blog article in tonight, but I’m too doggone tired to write. Sorry… I was even thinking of a topic, but I don’t want to reveal it, just in case I decide to write about it later. Maybe tomorrow. Yeah, after I finish all the housework. Entropy is one thing you can always count on… Just last week, the kitchen was looking dreamy. All spic and span, and ready for whatever I had a notion to whip up. Ahhh, bliss! Kept up with the daily duties. Prepared interesting foods. Lovely. Today it’s a different story. There’s dishes in the sink and dishes in the drainer. Various fruits and veggies are lying in piles, waiting for attention, with bread and pastry threatening to spill out from bags... Read more

It always does. Not that I didn’t suspect it, of course… It was my birthday! And you know, for a woman that just turned forty-six, I look pretty damn good! Must be genetics, because I could do a lot more in the watching my weight and maintaining healthy eating habits. So, as the old Pantene advertisement says, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful!” What a busy day. First, hopped out of bed and started to check what, over the course... Read more

Went to my parents today to check on things in their flower gardens and containers and helped organized their garage sale. Went to bellydance class, then led my Hispanic choir practice, came home, watered plants, and am in the midst of several loads of laundry, all on the hottest day yet this year! Yikes! More tomorrow! Image by Walmart Stores via Flickr When life gives you lemons, they say, make lemonade. So when the food pantry gives you asparagus, make hollandaise! (Actually, I just steamed the asparagus, and served it with butter and parmesan cheese, with a side of Italian herb focaccia bread.) This is one of the ways that being given a quantity of free food forces one to get creative. You get what you get, so you make what you get! I went to... Read more

Image via Wikipedia, of something no one should have to do: sift cinders! Ever feel like you’re drowning—in possessions? Well, that’s happened to me. I have a little apartment, so maybe it’s not like an episode of Hoarders, but it’s not pretty. And ever since my daughter came home for the summer from college, it’s even less pretty! I knew that things had gotten bad after last winter’s spate of depression, but once the apartment reaches a certain point of... Read more

Finished this incarnation of my patio garden last night, but WAY too tired to write. I think I can say that it’s pretty much done, or at least as much as any garden is actually done at any given time. Oh, there’s more I’d like to do, but I’ve pretty much run out of containers and I’m about out of money, too. I have no personal problem with using any cast off pails or other recycled containers for plants, but... Read more

Image via Wikipedia My daughter, Sophia, and I made an excellent lunch today: Grilled chicken and pineapple sandwiches! Of course, since there was about one hour of sunshine, we made them on the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Grilling Machine, but it was a poor substitute for the outdoor fun. Grilled Chicken and Pineapple Sandwiches: (multiply ingredients per person) 1 chicken breast, boneless and skinless 1 slice fresh pineapple 1 sturdy bun (don’t use regular hamburger buns, they’ll fall apart) Lime... Read more
