I am a practicing contemporary Catholic (although I love traditional worship) and a Native Texan who was born in Dallas. I am also a Pediatric Academic Language Therapist who serves children with developmental, learning, and cognitive disabilities through private practice. I am also a Licensed Dyslexia Therapist and a Certified Autism Specialist. Right now, I am working on clinical certifications in neuro-cognition and LBGTQIA+ mental health. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree from Baylor University and a Master’s Degree from Concordia University Texas plus some Catholic lay seminary work which continues. My husband Grant of 28 years and I have four grown children in their 20s, three biological children, and one adopted child. Since I want to respect my family’s privacy, I am focusing my outreach efforts mostly as a clinician of faith who loves kids and advocates for their well-being. Although, most who know me know that we have raised kids on neurodivergent spectrums. This is why my Tik Tok series is called “The Neuro-Catholic MamaBear.”
I have early-onset Parkinson’s Disease and received advanced Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in 2017. Due to the neurodiverse spectrums of our family and my years of working with Neurodivergent children, I believe that following mainstream current science in both ministry and medicine is about the sanctity of life, human dignity, and love of humanity, meaning that following current mainstream science is pro-life and loving our neighbor as ourselves which is Jesus’ second greatest commandment. This is not mean that we have to discard our religious beliefs. It is the application of our beliefs which must change, or kids will continue to be harmed and actually die at the hands of untrained clergy and laity.
If my videos become popular, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 12:30-12:40 CT, I will display a Tik Tok video about what it is like for the Diverodivergent family in society, different types of schools, and in the Church. I will also be giving some educational lessons.
As a pediatric specialty therapist, I define Neurodivergent as an umbrella term for individuals who have a brain or mind that diverges from what is typical in the general population. This includes psychological, neurological, genetic, cognitive, and even physical variances on a number of human spectrums. I will also use the most current mainstream science and suggestions for safe and inclusive practices which align with best research-based practice.
