As a Former Republican, I Highly Respect Liz Cheney

As a Former Republican, I Highly Respect Liz Cheney October 24, 2024

This morning, my husband Grant and I were discussing current events as we many times do during morning coffee. Grant is still a moderate Republican while he respected my move to become a Democrat in 2018. Like me, we both are not Trump fans to say the least.

As a former Republican, I’m not sure if many people fully comprehend the acts of courage, bravery, and heroism former Rep. Liz Cheney made during the Trump era and beyond.  She placed her career, her family, her own life, and everything she has in grave danger by attempting to save our country and constitutional democracy by publicly denouncing Trump and Republicans who enable him. She also admitted she was wrong when she didn’t support legal gay marriage in 2015 at the time it became legal.  Five years ago, I came to understand the full legal protections, including passing the Equality Act, are necessary to keep LGBTQ+ people safe from the Religious Right. Therefore, I admit I was wrong in 2015 as Liz Cheney admitted the same.

Even further, Liz Cheney is about as conservative as they come on her policies, from overturning Roe v Wade (which is where I stopped), to strong national defense, the rule of law, minimal government overreach, and fidelity to the US Constitution.  Liz Cheney was a majority January 6th committee member to hold Donald Trump to account for his actions to overturn the 2020 election.  Since she was a key Republican on this committee, it placed her at odds with Donald Trump and her Republican colleagues.   This is my favorite quote from her during her service on the January Sixth committee. “To my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible, there will come a day when when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.” Liz Cheney’s main reason for not supporting Trump is his willingness to “Trash the United States Constitution,” overturn the 2020 election, and not support NATO allies.

In addition to Liz Cheney’s service on the January sixth committee, she also has been interviewed on various news channels, talk shows, and radio podcasts about the dangers of Donald Trump and supporting Kamala Harris for President. Kamala Harris and Liz Cheney disagree on most policy issues, but Liz Cheney wholeheartedly supports Kamala Harris because Cheney believes Harris loves the country and will do her best to uphold the United States Constitution. In Liz Cheney’s many interviews, even as a conservative, she has mentioned the misogyny of Republican men who serve with her, the dangers of Trump and Trumpism, and the need to elect Kamala Harris to save our country.

The risks Liz Cheney has taken to make these courageous moves against her own political party, against Donald Trump, and placing her family and herself in grave danger, need to be honored at national and international levels in my opinion. Donald Trump is calling for a military tribunal against Liz Cheney for her “betrayal” against him which places her and her family in an even greater danger.

Liz Cheney serves as a role model for me. I hope many Republicans and former Republicans will muster the courage to do what is right, support Kamala Harris for President, and reject Donald Trump.  I think a congressional medal of honor or a Nobel Peace Prize are in order for Liz Cheney after Donald Trump is hopefully issued a sentence for some of his felonies.
