Christians & Moderate/Former Republicans Must Reject MAGA

Christians & Moderate/Former Republicans Must Reject MAGA October 26, 2024
In some of my past articles, I stated we were further outside of a fascist threat but heavily entrenched in Christian Nationalism.  Now that we are too close to this reality, I’m writing about it again. The only way to defeat Christian Nationalism currently and avoid a fascist state is to vote Kamala Harris and Tim Walz into the White House and other Democrats into positions of power which I think will happen.
If you are a Christian who left the Republican party and/or became a Democrat like me, if you still identify as a Christian, or if you are still a Republican, and you don’t identify with MAGA extremism/borderline fascism, I think we all collectively have a great responsibility to speak, act out against MAGA extremism in its many forms and faces, and elect Democrats up and down the ballot over the next two decades or more.  For Christians especially, I believe we (myself included) must apologize for the Christians who are behaving this way and adding to this serious and growing problem.
I don’t believe there is anyone who has a greater power to stop this, to speak, and act against this than other progressive Christians and former Republicans, particularly those with a public writing or speaking platform like me. I know my platform might be small, but it does make a difference.  Those who are experts in Christian Nationalism like Kristen DeMoz and Amanda Tyler say this problem of Christian Nationalism is not ending anytime soon. I met Amanda Tyler at the Texas capital building in Austin during the summer and have deep respect for her. She is an attorney, the founder of Christians Against Christian Nationalism, and a leader of the Joint Baptist Committee for Religious Liberty.
Until my last breath, I will make reparations of love to the LGBTQ+ community, apologize for what other Christians are doing to our country, and do everything I can to be the best person and Christian I can be. As Pope Francis says, “Just because someone is religious, it doesn’t make them a good person.” Sadly, these two can be the opposite of each other, particularly right now.  If you need a few good examples of Christians who fought Nazism, this would be Dietrich Bonhoeffer and St. Maximillian Kolbe. You can find other Nazi resisters here. https://wienerholocaustlibrary.org/
Trust me when I say that I struggle every day to stay in organized religion. It’s been the Church which has done both great good and great harm, and this is also true in my family’s life. I stay because I love God, family, and country enough to challenge Christians, Republicans, and the Church to do so much better.
