Answer by Deily member, Yaakov ben Chaim Tzvi:

The Talmud discusses spiritual issues disguised as “legal” issues in order to convey hidden messages to the reader. This is one reason why it’s impossible to study the Talmud without a teacher [Rabbi] as a typical person would miss the hidden meaning.

For example; the Talmud devotes pages upon pages of “legalistic ramblings” about a homeowner who misplaced a pearl he was watching for someone else. The unlearned reader would believe that the sages were wasting their time talking about a situation that rarely, if ever, happens.

The reality however is that the Talmud is not actually discussing a “pearl”, the pearl represents the wisdom of the Torah and the Talmud is explaining how we have God’s scriptures in our home and misplace them by not studying His eternal word; we lose the pearl as it were in our home.

So what is our obligation to our creator for taking his “pearl” and not utilizing to its potential? What are we responsible for paying the owner as a result of losing his pearl. So too; no one has ever blown a shofar within a shofar; it’s just a parable to explain outer vs. inner; physical vs. spiritual”.
