The Moon is full in Aquarius on August 10th – the second Supermoon (TM Richard Nolle) of the summer.  When the Full Moon is a Supermoon it appears larger than usual in the sky and its influence is more powerful.  Full Moons represent the culmination of our emotional awareness – the peak of insight and intuition and an opening of the heart.

Aquarius is known as the Water Bearer – while Aquarius is an air sign and tends to be rather uncomfortable in the realm of feelings, it acts as the container for the emotions (the water element) to flow through the personality and find a higher expression through insight and intuition.  The element of air represents the intellect, but it is the connection with emotional intelligence (water) that brings true wisdom.  Under the influence of Aquarius we are able to harness the realm of feeling and tether it to reason, enhancing our understanding of the way the world works.

Aquarius is ruled traditionally by Saturn and its modern ruler is Uranus, and both of these planets are active in the chart of this Full Moon (Saturn in Scorpio is in a square to the Sun and Moon, and Uranus in Aries is in a trine to the Sun and sextile to the Moon).  Because of Saturn, we will likely find that an adjustment is required in order to resolve the natural tension between the Leo focus on the individual personality and the Aquarian need to subsume the individual into the collective and create lasting change. Any planetary system involving Saturn requires focus and attention in order to navigate successfully.

The Sun is conjunct Mercury, planet of the mind and intellect, and both are trine Uranus.  I like to think of Uranus as the “higher octave” of Mercury – where Mercury directs the mental function, Uranus governs the higher mind.  Intuition and the ability to take a broader view are its domain.  Under this Super Full Moon we have the ability to gain a new perspective – to see things under a different light and gain new understanding.

Like all Full Moons, this one expands the emotional realm and makes it easier to slip in and out of the heart centers, and with Leo ruling the heart itself, the opening of the heart is a given.  Under the Leo/Aquarius polarity we are balancing the individual personal experience (Leo) with the transpersonal and communal experience (Aquarius), and the Water Bearer is facilitating that balance of the mind and heart.
