There comes a time in our Christian lives when even praying feels dry. We find it hard to lift our souls to God and the burden in our hearts is too heavy for words.

During such times, music can be the very language that carries our prayers to heaven. It satisfies our thirsty souls by filling them with this mysterious beauty that God pours down upon us.

Have you ever experienced hearing such a beautiful song that it made you cry? Such is the power of music.

Here are the many ways that music can become an instrument of God’s healing:

1. Music calms our wandering mind

Sometimes our mind wanders constantly and make us anxious. It can get to a point when we can no longer stop thinking and we are overwhelmed.

When this happens, music helps us by quieting our thoughts and calming our minds.

A calm melody leads us to a quiet place. Christian music with lyrics that speak about God’s steadfast love and faithfulness also reminds us that we should place our trust upon Him instead of letting fear dominate our thoughts.

“And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:15-16 NABRE)

2. Music leads us gently into the presence of God

The way that music engages us helps us to return to the sweet and gentle presence of God.

Here, it is not a sermon or any formal talk that inspires us. It is that tender melody that touches the heart or the warmth of the lyrics that invite us to come and dwell again in God’s very presence.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.”
(Psalm 23:6, NRSVCE)

3. Music speaks for us when our words fail

There are days when we just can’t find the right words to express everything we’re feeling. We don’t know whether we are angry or sad or just tired of everything that’s been happening in our lives. Through it all, we still want to hold on and keep the faith.

This is where religious music comes to speak for us. Through the lyrics and melody of a song, we are carried in spirit to convey everything we wanted to pray for.

Is it grief trying to abide in God’s love? Is it a broken heart yearning not to be alone?

Music plays the story of our lives and more than listening, we become one with the message of the song.

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:8, NRSVCE)

4. Music renews our strength and hope

Singing along with Christian songs can help re-awaken our hope and call to mind the strength we can find in God.
These songs help us to fix our gaze upon Him who watches over us and is the Source of all that is good.

“…be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:18-20, NRSVCE)

5. Music helps us to let go and surrender everything to God

Beautiful things have that power to draw us in and capture our hearts and minds. We go out from ourselves into a place of light, hope and peace.

The same is true with beautiful music. It guides us into letting go of the things that weigh us down. Music finds a way to help us surrender to God and entrust to Him our lives.

“Let my prayer be incense before you;
my uplifted hands an evening offering.”
(Psalm 141:2, NABRE)

6. Music comforts us in our loneliness

A weary heart can find it hard to pray. This is where music steps in.

Through the lyrics and melody of an inspiring song, we feel that we are not alone.

Someone else feels the same way that we do. And that song that somebody else has written is meant to call upon Him who is always there for those who need His merciful hands.

“The Lord is near to all who call upon him,
to all who call upon him in truth.
He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
(Psalm 145:18-19, NABRE)

7. Music touches and heals our deepest wounds

There are wounds so deep that we may not even know they are there. We just know that something is not right and something needs to be healed.

Through music, God enters the cracks in our broken hearts and touches us right where we need His healing.

“He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3, NRSVCE)

Let God Bless You Through Healing Music

God uses every channel that can carry His grace and blessings to His children. Music is one such gift that can help convey His warmth and kindness. Through the inspiring words and melodies that we hear and sing, we are transported into a place of stillness.

In that stillness, we can find God’s presence again.

Let His sweet and gentle presence wash over you and calm your spirit. Let it embrace you in all your broken parts, healing you and making you whole.

“The Lord, your God, is in your midst,
a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness,
he will renew you in his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing
as on a day of festival.
(Zephaniah 3:17-18, NRSVCE)
