If only this problem would go away, then I could be at peace!

Have you ever felt this way? Most people have. Just because it’s a common way of thinking, however, doesn’t mean that it’s true. Authentic peace doesn’t result from the absence of problems. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and flows from a relationship with Jesus Christ. St. Paul wrote about it in his letter to the Colossians:

Let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. (Colossians 3:15)

Take note of his wording. He tells us to “let the peace of Christ control our hearts”. It’s not automatic. We have to let it happen. Once we do, then we’ll feel the peace. I know what you’re thinking. It sounds good, but how can I do it? If you read a little further, you’ll see a great suggestion. Be thankful for the presence of Jesus in your life!

Let’s pray together…

Lord Jesus, It’s not easy to feel peaceful when so many things are messed up in my life. Everywhere I look, I see nothing but problems. In spite of my troubles, however, I want to thank you. For my life, a new day, for redeeming me and for being my friend. When I allow my mind to think about you instead of my problems, I begin to feel a slight sense of peace. The fact that you are always with me makes my difficulties easier to bear. Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who came to live in me when I was baptized. I pray that his peace will spread throughout my entire body. I ask this in your blessed name. Amen.
