We tend to have difficulty appreciating things that are invisible. I am surrounded by air, electricity, atoms and radio waves, but I rarely think about them. Why? Well, mainly because I can see them. Because God is pure spirit and can’t be seen, we sometimes forget about him too. The people of the Old Testament also struggled with this issue. Unfortunately, they often created idols as visible substitutes for the one, true God.
You have an incredible advantage over the Israelites, who found it difficult to worship a God they couldn’t see. According to St. Paul:
Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15)
God wants to be real to you. He doesn’t want you to look for false gods. He sent Jesus to help you see him more clearly. Looking at images of Jesus and reading his words in Scripture will help you to “see” God, but there’s something even better. Whenever you see the little white host at Mass, you not only see Jesus, but you see the invisible God.
Do you realize how blessed you are?
