Spending our precious time

Spending our precious time March 4, 2020

My sons and I recently went to a local restaurant to celebrate international Ice Cream for Breakfast Day (a holiday I simply cannot endorse enough). While we were waiting for our food, my eldest boy found a stack of questions on the table. The questions were designed to help stimulate conversation while patrons waited for their food. The first one he asked was “would you rather have more time or more money?” Looking at my boys in that moment, it was easy to answer. I would choose time every time.

It is possible to make more money, but no matter what I do I can never make more time.

I think this is a powerful lesson as we focus on our Journey to Easter. We treat so many of the activities in our lives as regrettable necessities, just a means to accomplish an end. We put up with our jobs, our chores, our errands, and our commutes as necessary evils.

The question my son asked made me reevaluate this perspective. How much of my life was I just trying to get through as quickly as possible? If my time is truly the most valuable thing I have, I don’t want to waste any of it.

What if I treated every moment as sacred and important? What if I took seriously that God is with me wherever I go, and I invited God into my life in every moment? Perhaps I would find that God doesn’t view any of my life as unimportant. Perhaps I would begin to recognize how precious each breath truly is.

Lent is the perfect time to invite God into the journey of your life. I encourage you to open the door and invite God to join you on every step along the way.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Questions for Today

  • What are some places in your life that you feel are simply “necessary evils”?
  • How might you invite God to journey with you during these times this week?
