The above cartoon by Daryl Cagle illustrates how simplistic the Media’s coverage of the sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Church is. The RCC has always been a target for the media… and in this case they have brought the criticism upon themselves. However I do think much of what I have encountered has been extremely biased.
My wife is Catholic and she is suffering a great deal because of this. I think her experience is representative of Catholics as a whole. They feels angry at the behavior of the system but are unable to really process it because they are being accused of being accomplices to rape simply by exercising stewardship. The Priests have become demonized by no fault of their own, other then their vocation. And the media just keeps ripping off the scabs.
I would like the media to approach the problem more wholisticly looking at this tragity in the context of history, culture, and use this as a time to really help people understand the polity of the RCC.
I would like to see more healing and less hating…
