Last week I picked up Strength for the JourneyStrength for the Journey: A Pilgrimage of Faith in Community by Diana Butler Bass. It was my first book by Bass. I have been prompted by more then a few people to read her stuff. She has been called the leading voice for the future of the “Mainline” churches. I have to say I really enjoyed the book. I couldn’t put it down The book follows the life of Diana through the... Read more

Many of you may have seen the Brick testament. It’s a common feature on my StumbleUpon adventures. It’s a collection of bible stories and wisdom illustrated by elaborate lego people. In my years of youth ministry I found that a lot of the kids absolutely loved it. I was actually surprisingly moved by it. . Rarely do you see a certain sayings of Jesus put to images. For example the passage about gauging you eye out if it causes you... Read more

If you haven’t listened to the lecture we posted last week by Tickle go to http://orant.blogspot.com/2009/07/are-we-in-another-reformation-phyllis.html If you listened to the talk by Phyllis Tickle last week and found yourself resonating, as I do, with denominational ties but also want to engage with other Christian traditions you might be a Hyphenated Christian. Take a peek! http://p.castfire.com/t75iH/video/135659/135659_2009-08-05-004142.flv What role do our denominations... Read more

I have been reading a book called The Way of a Pilgrim recently. It’s a really interesting story about a mans quest to pray without ceasing… I have a lot to write about in regards to the book itself, but one of the characters got me thinking about something somewhat unrelated, reading the Bible. In the book one of the characters the protagonist runs into tells him he is in the habit of reading one of the gospels every day.... Read more

When I drive around I generally like to listen to lectures on religion… My wife on the other hand is more looking for something funny. We only have one Car so this difference in preference usually means one of us has to give way to the other. More recently, though, we can’t really find stuff that’s even tolerable. The main issue we run into is most of the stuff I want to listen to is pretty dry. I feel guilty about even... Read more

I first ran into Phyllis Tickle when I started exploring the liturgy of the hours. She wrote a great breviary called The Divine Hours (you can check out over at the Ann Arbor Vineyard web-page which hosts a Daily Online version.) Soon after she kept turning up. I heard interviews with her on Podcasts, I ran into her while visiting my brother’s church. She wrote a number of forwards to books I was reading. I was impressed with a lot... Read more
