By most accounts, I am a young mother. I had my first daughter at 22 and I still feel pretty hip at 31 years of age.
However, I have certain style prejudices for “mother-age” women which are now coming into conflict with my own membership in this age group. OK, prepare to be alienated: I don’t even think women over 40 should have hair beyond their shoulders, it seems absurd. I am not sure about women above thirty wearing shorts either. Fingernail polish colors should become limited to about two at age 30. Denim, I am not even sure that should be allowed out to the twenties… maybe as a skirt or jacket, but never the pants. Phew, breath, breathe, you all hate me now.
Well, I have lived five years in the heart of Europe, and these Euro-women have really challenged my agism style prejudices. These women never throw in the towel. You are not going to see every white-haired woman in a velour jumpsuit, no way, she is still in heels, getting her groceries at the downtown market every weekend.
So, here are the items up for discussion. I am feeling pulled toward some of those high-heeled sneakers. Again, I am thirty-one years young and have four small, loud children. Am I going to look like that mom whose children cringe at her outfit choices? Also, I bought fuchsia skinny jeans, which I rather love, but feel a bit extreme each time I pull them out. Can a 30+ wear fuschsia?
