High-top Sneakers

High-top Sneakers June 18, 2013

By most accounts, I am a young mother. I had my first daughter at 22 and I still feel pretty hip at 31 years of age.
However, I have certain style prejudices for “mother-age” women which are now coming into conflict with my own membership in this age group. OK, prepare to be alienated: I don’t even think women over 40 should have hair beyond their shoulders, it seems absurd. I am not sure about women above thirty wearing shorts either. Fingernail polish colors should become limited to about two at age 30. Denim, I am not even sure that should be allowed out to the twenties… maybe as a skirt or jacket, but never the pants. Phew, breath, breathe, you all hate me now.

Well, I have lived five years in the heart of Europe, and these Euro-women have really challenged my agism style prejudices. These women never throw in the towel. You are not going to see every white-haired woman in a velour jumpsuit, no way, she is still in heels, getting her groceries at the downtown market every weekend.
So, here are the items up for discussion. I am feeling pulled toward some of those high-heeled sneakers. Again, I am thirty-one years young and have four small, loud children. Am I going to look like that mom whose children cringe at her outfit choices? Also, I bought fuchsia skinny jeans, which I rather love, but feel a bit extreme each time I pull them out. Can a 30+ wear fuschsia?

I would just remind you that the only people with less fashion sense than white Americans are the Germans. Be careful what you import…

note to self, bring two pairs of high top sneakers, MA wants neons

I got black reebok high tops as a present for getting through my first serious dental procedure. I was in third grade. Black. I looked just like Madonna.

  • I love skinny jeans, but hate the high tops — sorry! And I could not agree more with MA, Germans are not known for their style 😉

Excuse me, but is someone forgetting the German girl here on the blog?!? I beg to differ – Germans have a superb sense of fashion, and are usually much more appropriately dressed than their American counterparts. There is, of course, the punk rock culture for some, but in general, their dress is smart and quite nice!

agreed, Kat. Smart and nice. Now hair coloring, that is a different story.

I’m not a fan of sneakers in general, but all the Asian moms rock them and to me, they have the best sense of fashion in my little neck of the woods (Northern NJ). It does help that they are generally under 5’3 and weigh on average 99lbs, but they do like their logos – Gucci, Prada, Tory Burch and Michael Kors – speaking of which, he has some cute ones out.
