I’ve been learning a lot as a mom lately.  Learning how little control I have over some issues with my children… yet how my influence and outlook as a mom is still paramount.  It has been trying.  I haven’t been sprinting through it like usual, but instead clamoring on, tripping, righting myself, and trying to keep pace.  This mom road is a long one and feels even longer in the face of certain challenges.  We’ve talked before how it is... Read more

Fall is the season for baking and decorating and crafting. I have made peace with the fact that crafting isn’t my thing. No ability, no desire, no thank you. Fortunately, my oldest daughter is a crafty type, and a nostalgic little soul, so anything we’ve done in Falls past needs to be done again or else it’s not really Fall. So, after several flesh burns from 300 degree caramel, a lost tooth, a legendary mess of toppings on the kitchen... Read more

My days are busy and I am not finding much time to stop and smell the roses.  I thought, in a funky and resentful mood last week, that this was because there were not enough roses in my life, but I have been praying for some inner calm and the fruit of that prayer is abundant. I tend to think that a positive family life means that we are all together, laughing, playing board games or reading scripture, playing touch... Read more

Recently, the editors of Patheos offered us the opportunity to read and review Bob Fu and Nancy French’s new book entitled “God’s Double Agent: The True Story of a Chinese Christian’s Fight for Freedom.” I gladly accepted, as I have been interested in the topic of religious persecution across the globe for quite some time now. As I finished the book, I came away with one dominant thought: Every American needs to read this book. Despite recent attacks on religious... Read more

Recently, a dear friend passed on an extra ticket to a local baby and children’s consignment sale slated for the end of last week. I had known about the sale for a few weeks and thought I would check it out, but honestly wasn’t sure of what to expect. This was certainly the case since for many of the items we have needed for our daughter since she’s been born, I’d much rather have new simply because we want more... Read more

Newly back in America after five years of living in Europe, we are getting into all things American. So we went camping. This is the first time we have busted out camping gear that we were given as wedding gifts. Ten years, no camping, but here we went. While loading the car I left the crucial bag with headlamps, nighttime diaper and camera on the table. I attempted tin-foil pocket dinners that were horribly burned in the fire, and we kind... Read more

Recently, there have been rumblings in several cultural magazines of female dissatisfaction with available birth control methods.  This sentiment is not all that surprising to me.  During my years in medical school, patient clinic appointments were commonly devoted to women’s concerns about their contraceptive method and their desires to try something different.  But despite all the complaints I heard about condoms and contraceptives behind closed clinic doors, many colleagues and friends (and perhaps even some family members?) looked at me in shocked... Read more

Pope Francis gave another beautiful homily this weekend as he honored Mary. I was struck by the simplicity and humility in the first person questions he spoke. They would make terrific, challenging yet simple, questions by which to examine our consciences. In our culture we tend to make things so complicated when “only one thing is needed.” And you can bet that we will be saying a lot more “thank you’s” at our house! Today let us all ask ourselves... Read more

We awoke this morning to dense fog.  It was the creepy kind that obscures traffic lights and hides morning walkers.  I rolled out of bed, less than enthusiastic, and shuffled to the gym.  Workout, check (wondering if I will be able to walk later??).  Thankfully it was done and the full day lay before me.  Then I headed home to find this… How is it that our sweet ones can be so darn pathetic when under the weather?  I am... Read more
