I have struggled with falling asleep, staying asleep, and returning to sleep for as long as I can remember. I will say that falling asleep at bedtime has gotten easier due to the sheer exhaustion of a day spent caring for a house and many children. But returning to sleep? Still very difficult. So, if my husband and I don’t train our children to stay out of our bedroom at night, I quickly reach a level of sleep deprivation that takes... Read more

As of tonight, we will be posting only on our spanky new Patheos.com website.  Please set your RSS feeds and readers accordingly!  Hint — one of us could be within days of giving birth, and the big announcement will be made ONLY on the new site — you don’t want to miss it.  Yes, Incredible Family, I have just shamelessly used your child for marketing purposes!  Maybe I’ll get him this BC onesie and he can be the official poster... Read more

Last year, MaryAlice made a comment that she was trying to focus on using up those things that tend to accumulate in the pantry over the course of a year. I’m not sure if it is part of her Lenten food plan this year, but I found it to be a great exercise last year and am trying to do it again. It makes me more conscientious about what we are using and wasting and more grateful for the bounty... Read more

…In the kitchen, that is. In preparation for a visit from my in-laws, I am attempting to streamline my kitchen cabinets so that our guests will have a fighting chance of finding, say, the honey jar that was formerly hidden behind a wall of spice jars, or the crackers that were smooshed between the boxes of pasta and jars of canned tomatoes. The system makes sense to me, of course, because I came up with it, but it might not... Read more

Not to beat a dead horse, but I thought this WSJ article on the HHS mandate was right on point, Limbaugh and Our Phony Contraception Debate by Cathy Ruse. Here is an excerpt– Ms. Fluke’s crusade for reproductive justice is simply a demand that a Catholic institution pay for drugs that make it possible for her to have sex without getting pregnant. It’s nothing grander or nobler than that. Georgetown’s refusal to do so does not mean she has to... Read more

“…Put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.” ~Ephesians 4:22-24 St. Paul was a great teacher of Christianity because he understood the human spirit – he knew the weakness and the strength, the foolishness and the wisdom, the vice and the virtue of the human person. In the... Read more

We are trying to do a (mostly) vegetarian Lent so that we reduce our grocery bill and can send some extra money to those in need this year. However, I am determined that it not be pasta every night of the week, since many of my quick, go to meals involve chicken or beef. I have created a menu plan for this week, and any keepers will make it on to next week’s plan as well. We are super duper... Read more
