Thirsty for the wine of Christ’s love, Mary: Day 116

St. Bernard prays to Our Lady using the image of wine, drawing from the Gospel account of her intercessory role at the marriage feast in Cana (see Jn 2:1–12).

To you we cry,
Queen of Mercy! Return to us,
so that we may behold you dispensing favors, bestowing remedies, giving strength.

Ah, tender mother!
Tell your all-powerful Son that we have no more wine.
We are thirsty for the wine of his love, for that marvelous wine
that fills souls with a holy drunkenness, that sets them on fire,
that gives them the strength
to despise the things of this world
and to seek after heavenly things with passion.
—St. Bernard of Clairvaux

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
Am I thirsty for the wine of Christ’s love? Have I ever felt a “holy drunken- ness” because of that love, that fills me with gladness?

CLOSING PRAYER
Pray for us thirsty souls, Blessed Mother, so that when we’re filled with the love of your Son, we’ll be eager to follow your instruction: “Do whatever he tells you” (Jn 2:5).
