Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows
St. Bridget of Sweden was a visionary who spoke often with the Blessed Virgin and had a deep love for her. Here she focuses on the role of Mary’s sorrows in our redemption.
O Blessed Virgin Mary, immaculate Mother of God,
who endured a martyrdom of love and grief
beholding the sufferings and sorrows of Jesus!
You cooperated in the benefit of my redemption
by your countless afflictions
and by offering to the Eternal Father his only-begotten Son
as a holocaust and victim of propitiation for my sins.
I thank you for the unspeakable love
that led you to deprive yourself
of the Fruit of your womb,
Jesus, true God and true Man,
to save me, a sinner.
Make use of the unfailing intercession of your sorrows
with the Father and the Son,
so that I may steadfastly correct my life
and never again crucify my loving Redeemer by new sins;
and so that, persevering till death in his grace,
I may obtain eternal life
through the merits of his cross and passion.
Mother of love, of sorrow, and of mercy,
Pray for us.
—St. Bridget of Sweden
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
A lively sense of gratitude deepens our love for those to whom we’re indebted.
What has God done for me? What am I willing to offer him in return?
CLOSING PRAYER
Giver of all good gifts, how can I even begin to thank you? In return, I offer you all I have and all I am, in this moment and forever.
