Dionysius the Areopagite tells us that hierarchy is not just a way of organizing either individual angels or humans. There is a similar hierarchy in every mind. Your own mind is organized in such a way as to lead you toward participation in the perfection of God.
It would be appropriate to add here that each mind, either heavenly or human, has within itself its own special first, and middle, and last ranks, and pow- ers, which work separately in our own minds, just as we said the different ranks of the hierarchy work in passing down mystical enlightenment.
In this way each mind participates in the most spotless purification, the most abundant light, and the greatest degree of perfection possible and ordained for that individual. For there is nothing really perfect in itself, or completely without need of being perfected, except God, who is self-perfect and preeminently perfect. –Dionysius the Areopagite, The Celestial Hierarchy, 10
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .
Do I allow the higher parts of my mind to lead the lower parts, the way the higher beings in Heaven lead the lower? Or do the lower parts of my mind take the lead?
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, repel the dark assaults of sin from my understanding, and gladden my mind with the divine radiance of your angels.
