Only the Son truly knows the Father, says St. Ephrem the Syrian. No matter how far superior the angels are to us, they—like  us—cannot know the Father except through the Son.

No mind can reach the mighty height of its Maker. To go above this height, or below it, is merely to pry like the over-curious. They harry themselves to come up with some likeness of him who is only like himself. They all go astray when they try to know him, because the Only-Begotten is the only one who knows him.

He is not of the family of created things, so they cannot look into him as if he were their equal. He is not one of the things framed, so that we could describe him. He is not like the angels, so that they could pry into him as if he were their relative. He is not an equal of the Cherubim, who carry him as Lord. He does not fly among the Seraphim, since his glory is at the right hand. He is not with the ministering spirits, since with his Father he is ministered to. All the hosts of Heaven are entrusted to his command. They cannot see the Father without the First-Born, their Commander, because without him they were not framed when they were made.

The eye is enough for the light, and with it the whole body is lightened. The ear understands the voice, and the limbs hear by it. The mouth tastes food, and the whole body tastes by it and with it.

In the same way, by the Son who is from his bosom do the angels see the Father; by him they hear his voice as well; by him they receive his gift. –St. Ephrem the Syrian,  Rhythm 1 on the Faith

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

If even angels can know the Father only through the Son, am I taking every opportunity to cultivate the acquaintance of the Son?

CLOSING PRAYER

My Guardian Angel, you were sent by god to be my faithful guide. Always  lead me to thSon, through whom alone I can know the Father.
