God was in charge of creation, Angels: Day 074

angels_irenaeus_1God was in charge of creation

Some  heretics have believed that the devil and his  angels created the world against the wishes  of  the good God. St. Irenaeus says  they’re suggesting thaGod is less competent than a good foreman at a construction site.

Now, some say that the world was formed by angels, or by some other maker of it, against the will of the supreme Father. But they’re wrong, first of all, in this main point: when they say that angels formed such a great and mighty cre- ation, against the will of God Most High.

That would imply that the angels were more powerful than God—or, if not, then that God was careless, or inferior, or paid no attention to those things that were happening in his own possessions. It implies that he didn’t care whether they turned out well or badly, so that he could prevent them from turning out badly, and praise and rejoice over their turning out well.

We wouldn’t even expect a man who was at all competent to act that way. We certainly couldn’t expect it from God! –St. Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 2.2

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

If God made creation the way he wanted it, how does what I do with my own free will correspond to God’s plan for the world? Do I remember to ask for angelic help in knowing and following God’s will?

CLOSING PRAYER

O Lord, together with the Seraphim and Cherubim and all the hosts of Heaven, I praise you for the glories of creation.
