Reason tells us God is our Ruler: Angels, Day 075

angels_irenaeus_1Reason tells us God is our Ruler

Against heretics who claimed that angels or a sub-divine creator made the universe without knowing about the Supreme God, St. Irenaeus says that no intelligent being can be so ignorant. All beings with reason know that there is a God, and that he is our Ruler.

And how could either the angels or the supposed creator of the world have been ignorant of the Supreme God? They were his property, and his crea- tures, and were contained by him.

It’s true that he might have been invisible to them because of his superior- ity, but because of his providence he certainly could not have been unknown to them. Even though it is true, as they say, that their inferiority kept them very far separated from him, yet it was fitting for them to know their Ruler, since his dominion extended over them. And they especially had to be aware of this: that he who created them is Lord of all. Since his invisible essence is mighty, it gives every creature a profound mental intuition and perception of his powerful—in fact omnipotent—greatness.

Therefore, although “no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” (Matt. 11:27), still all beings do know at least this one fact, because reason has been implanted in their minds, and it moves them and reveals to them that there is one God, the Lord of all. –St. Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 2.2

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Like the angels, I have the gift of reason that tells me there is a God. Do I use my reason as they do, to understand God’s will and to serve him?

CLOSING PRAYER

Holy  angels, you were never ignorant of  the Supreme God, and you chose to serve. Strengthen me in my resolve, so that I may serve God eternally with you.
