Satan fell, and we followed; Angels: Day 103

Satan fell, and we followed; Angels: Day 103 November 1, 2016

angels_tatianThe first of all the angels, Tatian tells us, was worshiped as a god by human beings. For his pride, Satan was cut off from all fellowship with the Word, and

he and his angelic followers became the demons.

The power of the Word had the ability in itself to foresee future events— not that those events were fated, but rather they came about through the choice of beings who acted freely. From time to time the Word foretold what would happen in times to come. It also began to forbid wickedness by prohibitions, and at the same time to praise those who remained good.

But people attached themselves to one being who was more subtle than the rest, because he was the first-born, and declared that he was God, though he went against the will of God.

Then the power of the Word excluded the originator of this foolishness from all fellowship with the Word. Thus he who was made in the likeness of God be- comes mortal, because the more powerful spirit has separated itself from him. But that first-begotten one, through his transgression and ignorance, becomes a demon. Those who imitated him—that is, his illusions—have become a host of demons, and through their own free choice have been given up to their folly.

–Tatian, Address to the Greeks, 7

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

CLOSING PRAYER
King of glory, accept my prayer; cleanse my mind from all influence of the devil, and guard me from everything evil..
