Make no sacrifices to angels; Angels: Day 151

angels_augustine_2The more a being loves God, says St. Augustine, the less that being wants any of the worship due to God alone. That’s  why, although angels are incomparably more powerful and pure than we are, we never worship them.

As for the spiritual part of creation, it is either pious or impious: the pious being people and angels who are righteous, and who serve God in the right way; the impious being wicked people and angels, whom we also call devils.

Now, it’s obvious that sacrifice must not be offered to a spiritual creature, even a righteous one, because the more pious and submissive to God any creature is, the less he presumes to aspire to the honor that he knows belongs to God alone.

Then how much worse it is to sacrifice to devils—that is, to a wicked spiritual creature—which, living in the comparatively dark heaven nearest the earth, as in the prison assigned to him in the air, is doomed to eternal punishment. –St. Augustine, Letter 102

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

If an objective observer could see into my mind, would he see me offering sacrifice to devils, like greed or anger?

CLOSING PRAYER

Sanctify my soul, body, and spirit, Lord, and cast out the demons of worldly desires.
