Praised by angels, born in poverty; Angels: Day 175 January 12, 2017

angels_gregory_thaumaturgusAlthough as God he was  without beginning, says  St. Gregory the Wonder-Worker, Christ’s life on earth began the way every childs life begins. The God whom Cherubim praise was a child who shared our misery so he could lift us out of it.

Turn, congregations, and come—let us all praise him who is born of the Virgin. Praise him because, although he was the glory and image of the Divinity before the ages, he still came to suffer poverty along with us. Although he was the power and image of God beyond all magnificence, he still took on the form of a slave. Although he puts on light as a garment, he still lived a life as wretched as ours. Although he is hymned by the Cherubim and by countless angels, he still lived as a citizen on earth. Although he existed before all existence and makes all creation alive, he was born of the Holy Virgin, so that he might make what he had first created live again. Although he shared the beginning-less life of God the Father, Christ, our God, began life as a human being, so that he could lift fallen humanity up to the beginning-less beginning of the Divinity. –St. Gregory Thaumaturgus, Homily  Concerning the Mother of God, 5-6

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor,” and the angels praised him in his poverty. Do I live a praiseworthy detachment from possessions?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, let me imitate your humble life, and gain the approval of the angels, by serving your creatures the way you served them.
