Suffer a little while, be with the angels forever; Angels: Day 238 March 18, 2017

angels_cyril_of_jerusalem_1The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter, says St. Cyril of Jerusalem, because hdoes exactly that. How can the martyrs face horrible tortures without blinking? Because the Spirit has whispered in their ears, reminding them that they will soon be with the angels.

And the Spirit is called the Comforter, because he comforts us, and encourages us.

Often a man is outraged, dishonored, and hurt for Christ’s sake. Tortures on every side—fire and sword—savage beasts—the deep pit. But the Holy Spirit softly whispers to him, “Wait for the Lord. What is happening to you now is trivial; what you’re being given is great. Suffer a little while, and be with angels forever.

‘The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us’ (Rom. 8:18).”

He portrays the kingdom of Heaven to the man; he almost shows him the paradise of delight. And the martyrs, whose faces must necessarily be turned toward their judges, but whose spirits are already in paradise, despise the hardships they see in front of them.

–St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecture 16, 20

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

If it helped martyrs face being torn apart by beasts, could remembering that God means me to share Heaven with angels, help me get through the mere annoyances of today?

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, I desire the company of angels eternally. I pray to you that your Spirit, the Comforter, may be sent down on me to strengthen me for your service.
