Friendship makes angels rejoice and lulls demons Angels: Day 241

angels_john_chrysostom_1St. John Chrysostom compares friendship to the music of a harp or orchestrawhere different notes produce a single harmony.

This is a wonderful thing to see: many in one, and one in many—just as the sounds are different in a harp, but the harmony is one, and all together they make one harmony and symphony

But the musician is the power of love. This is what plays the sweet melody, singing a song in which no note is out of tune. The angels rejoice at it, and the Lord, the God of angels. The whole audience in Heaven rises to hear it. The song even lulls the wrath of demons. It lulls the passions—in fact, it doesn’t even allow them to rise, but makes a deep calm.

Just as in the theater everyone listens with a hush and keeps perfect silence while the orchestra is playing, so among friends, when love plays the chords, all the passions are calmed and laid to sleep, like wild beasts chained and tamed. –St. John Chrysostom, Homily 40 on Acts

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

Is this a good description of my friendships? Do they calm demons and make angels rejoice? Or do they stir up trouble?

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, let me hear the sweet harmony of your life-giving commandments,  and with the joyful angels I will sing everlasting glory to you without ceasing.
