Grieving with Mary in her final two sorrows, Mary: Day 339

Pope Pius VII approved for the use of the faithful a series of “Seven Prayers in Honor of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” In this final portion of the devotion, we grieve with Mary in her final two sorrows.

I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, in the wounding of your com-

passionate heart when the side of Jesus was struck by the lance and his heart was pierced before his body was removed from the cross. Dear Mother, by your heart thus pierced through, obtain for me the virtue of fraternal charity and the gift of understanding.

I grieve for you, O Mary most sorrowful, for the pangs that wrenched your most loving heart at the burial of Jesus. Dear Mother, by your heart sunk in the bitterness of desolation, obtain for me the virtue of diligence and the gift of wisdom.

Let intercession be made for us, we beg you, O Lord Jesus Christ, now and at the hour of our death, before the throne of your mercy, by the Blessed Virgin Mary, your mother, whose most holy soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the hour of your bitter passion. Through you, O Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, world without end. Amen.

O Mary, Mother of Sorrows, I beg you, by the unspeakable tortures you endured at the death of your Son, offer to the Eternal Father, in my stead, your beloved Son all covered with blood and wounds, for the special grace that I now ask.

—From “Seven Prayers in Honor of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary”

IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER . . .

For each of these last two sorrows, prayer is offered to obtain a specific virtue and gift of the Holy Spirit. Which of these virtues and gifts do I need most to cultivate?

CLOSING PRAYER

Mary, help me to be charitable and diligent. Ask the Holy Spirit to give me the gifts of understanding and wisdom.
